As one of the major Internet and cable television providers in the United States, Comcast has a lot of customers—many of them who also have iPhones and iPod touches . The Comcast Mobile App is a handy app that lets you access your Comcast e-mail, manage your Digital Voice account, peruse Comcast’s TV listings, and watch trailers for movies on Comcast On-Demand.

An intuitive, tabbed interface lets you quickly switch between new e-mail, new voice messages or both. There is also an included address book that lets you consolidate your contacts between your iPhone and Comcast SmartZone address book (including Plaxo contacts)–a great addition that eliminates the confusion of having separate address books and no way of knowing which has all the contacts you need.

If you have Comcast’s Digital Voice service, you can manage your voicemail account through the Comcast Mobile App. You can see new voicemail messages in the SmartZone Inbox, but if you tap on the Digital Voice selection in the opening interface, you have more voicemail management options.

Comcast provides access to TV listings through The Guide. The Guide lets you load up your local Comcast cable guide, making it easy to check what’s on TV at a glance.  You can mark shows as a Favorite, Share a program description with someone over e-mail, or set a reminder, which will activate an alert on your iPhone when the show is about to start.  When you tap on a show, you get a description of the episode to be aired. Tap on Other Showtimes, and you get a list of future airings.

The On Demand section is also useful. However, when I think of “On Demand” I think of being able to order movies or TV shows when I want. Sort of like the way On Demand works on my cable TV at home. But it doesn’t work like that on the Comcast Mobile App, disappointingly. On Demand in the Comcast Mobile App currently shows a list of movie trailers that you can watch and get channel information. That’s it. Think of it as a video version of The Guide for On Demand on your cable TV.

The big omission, however, is the capability to set your DVR on the fly–an oft-requested feature that would be perfect for those moments when you remember a show is on, but are not at home to watch. Comcast says it will include DVR controls in a future release, but that’s the killer feature most people are looking for–making it a glaring omission.

Even without DVR controls, the Comcast Mobile App offers much more than the previously released Comcast TV Listings app, and as a free app, is a no-brainer for Comcast customers.
