When you attempt to sync your iPhone with another computer, you get the familiar, “The iPhone is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?” message.

But what if you want to use your home computer to sync pictures, music, videos and podcasts and your office computer to sync calendar and contact information?

It’s basically a 7 step process which takes some very simple hacking skills.

Step 1 – On your main computer, browse to your iTunes music folder and double click the file named iTunes Music Library.xml to open it in Notepad.

Step 2 – Write down the value of the Library Persistent ID key. (It should look something like 20F830293962CBA4) Take care not to modify the file before closing.

Step 3 - On your secondary computer, browse to your iTunes music folder and create a backup of iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library.itl. Select both files and press Control+c then Control+v on your keyboard. This will make a backup copy of the files.

Step 4 – Double click to open iTunes Music Library.xml in notepad. Make note of the current Library Persistent ID then change the Library Persistent ID key to the one we wrote down from Step Two and save the file.

Step 5 – Now we will need to open iTunes Library.itl using a HexEditor. You can download HexEdit from here.

Step 6 – Once you have opened iTunes Library.itl using HexEdit, search for the old Library Persistent ID we replaced in Step Four. Do this by clicking Find from the Menubar. Make sure to select Hex as your search type.

Step 7 – Once found, replace the old Library Persistent ID with the one from Part Two and save the file.

You can now launch iTunes and connect your iPhone to the new computer for syncing. Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Notice if now select Manually manage music and videos from the Summary Tab you will no longer be prompted to erase your data, nor will the files on your iPhone be grayed out.

<img

Then we’ll take a look at all the other terms you may of heard about when jailbreaking and unlocking.

What’s Jailbreak & Unlock

Jailbreaking is a process that allows iPhone and iPod Touch users to run unofficial code on their devices bypassing Apple‘s official distribution mechanism, the App Store. Once jailbroken, iPhone users are able to download many applications previously unavailable through the App Store via unofficial installers such as Cydia and Icy. It’s estimated that 4 million (out of 40 million) iPods and iPhones are jailbroken.

Unlocking refers to the process by which your iPhone can use SIM card from any carrier. For instance, iPhone is exclusively distributed by AT&T in US. In other words, it is locked and iPhone user in US can only use AT&T sim card. By going through the unlock process, your iPhone is allowed to use any carrier.

Jailbreaking Tools

Redsn0w – Redsn0w is the latest generation of Jailbreak tool offered by iPhone Dev Team that supports jailbreaking on iPhone OS 3.0. It supports all models of iPhone including iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS, as well as iPod Touch. Both Windows and Mac version are available. Redsn0w comes with built-in utility to unlock iPhone 2G. Jailbreaking using redsn0w is very straightforward and it is considered as the most user-friendly jailbreak utility iPhone. Redsn0w is also considered as a replacement of QuickPwn.

QuickPwn – Developed by iPhone Dev Team, QuickPwn is a jailbreak utility for iPhone 2G & 3G. It supports jailbreaking up to firmware 2.2.1. Both Windows and Mac versions are available. It also comes with built-in utility to unlock iPhone 2G. QuickPwn is considered as the most user-friendly utility for iPhone Jailbreak and now replaced by redsn0w.

PwnageTool – Also, developed by iPhone Dev Team, PwnageTool is a jailbreak tool for Mac platform only. It supports jailbreaking on iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and firmware level up to 3.0. Same as QuickPwn, it also provides built-in option to unlock iPhone 2G. Compared with QuickPwn, for which it performs jailbreaking directly on iPhone, PwnageTool takes a different approach of jailbreak that it creates a custom firmware file (i.e. IPSW) for jailbreaking. PwnageTool is considered as more flexible as it allows the direct modification of firmware file.

Purplera1n – Purplera1n is an alternative of jailbreak tool to Redsn0w and Pwnagetool for iPhone 3GS only. It is developed by GeoHot, who is the guy that developed an unlock solution for the 1st generation iPhone dated back to 2007. Purplera1n supports both Windows and Mac.

Unlocking Tools

Yellowsn0w – Yellowsn0w is the 1st generation of unlock tool, developed by iPhone Dev team, to unlock iPhone 3G and supports firmware 2.2 (with baseband version 02.28.00). The software is freely available via Cydia. You’ll need to first jailbreak the iPhone before you can install the software.

Ultrasn0w – Ultrasn0w is the 2nd generation of unlock tool, developed by iPhone Dev team, to replace yellowsn0w. It is considered the ultimate unlock tool (as of now) to unlock iPhone 3G and 3GS on iPhone OS 3.0. To use ultrasn0w, it is required to jailbreak your iPhone first. The ultrasn0w software is available from Cydia and it’s free.

Purplesn0w – Developed by GeoHot, Purplesn0w is an alternative to Ultrasn0w for iPhone 3GS unlock. To use Purplesn0w, you’ll need to jailbreak the iPhone with Purplera1n before applying Purplesn0w.

Application Installers

Cydia – Developed by Jay Freeman, cydia is the most common installer for 3rd party iPhone application. Cydia supports the latest version of iPhone OS 3.0 and is installed by default during jailbreak process. Most of the iPhone apps in cydia are free for download. But cydia also offers a cydia store for purchasing paid apps.

Icy – An alternative of Cydia for installing 3rd party apps on iPhone, developed by RipDev. As claimed by the team, Icy offers better performance over cydia and is designed to compatible with any cydia packages. Icy can be installed during jailbreak process.

Installer – Installer is the 1st generation of 3rd party application installer. It supports firmware up to 2.2. Installer is a great app installer before the debut of Cydia. However, as of today, the iPhone apps available on Installer is much less than that on Cydia or Icy.

[SimonBlog]

Related posts:

Open up Safari

Browse to the following site: http://help.benm.at/tethering.php

Find your country and select the provider you use. Then tap “Download”

Go to Settings, General, Network, Internet Tethering Bluetooth or USB

As always, this is performed at your OWN risk. For the most part, this works reasonably well and some have really complimented the speeds. Although some have had complications with visual voicemail depending on your country or carrier.

Related posts:

Now take an app from the 10th page and move it over to the 11th page. This will force an empty space and also boot the last icon off the page.

Download another app to fill in the empty space that was created.

You should now see a 12th home screen which will also have the apps that weren’t visible before.

This is a nice work-around if you prefer to keep the 4×4 layout on your pages. I would suggest taking a look at:

Fivelrows – Allows you to add a 5th row.

Five Springboard Column – Allows you to add a 5th column

Categories – Acts as a filing system allowing you to create folders to categorize your apps.

However, to access these alternatives, you must Jailbreak and access these downloads through Cydia.

No related posts.

Related posts brought to you by Turn off the auto-check email function. And if you are one who absolutely needs this functionality, at least set the fetch time to a higher number. If you are one that uses push email services, it is better that you change this option to fetch because it actually uses more power since a connection is left open.

If you are not using Bluetooth devices, shut this option off.

Turn off 3G when not needed. If you are in an area where your only purpose is to make calls, drop the 3G service and let it run on EDGE. Only use 3G if you are heavily relying on data connections for apps, GPS signals, etc..

The same goes for Wi-Fi. Shut off this option if it is not availble or if you are not using this feature for data speed improvements. You can also just shut off “Ask to join networks” feature in the WiFi settings. If you’re like me, you almost always know when there’s a Wi-Fi network around that you can use on your iPhone, and so it’s pointless (and a waste of battery life) for the iPhone to be constantly searching for one.

Use the Auto-Lock setting. I currently have mine set to 1 minute. This means after 1 minute your device will go to power down into standby (same as pressing the power/lock button at the top right of the device). You can improve this setting by getting in the habbit of hitting the power/lock button when you are finished.

Try not to play games while using the vibrate setting. This could suck the life out of your battery the more this gets triggered.

Adjust the LCD screen brightness. You shouldn’t be running this thing at full heat if you want to save battery power.

Turn the equalizer off if you listen to music a lot. Depending what type of music you listen to, this could be beneficial and lengthen the total playtime session.

Always make sure your device is up-to-date with the latest firmware. Upgrades from Apple engineers could lead to improved battery life.

Related posts:

<a

Why must it do a full backup every single time? It’s taking a ridiculous 5 to 10 minutes to do this.

Sure I can hit the ‘X’ button in the iTunes sync window to cancel the backup and continue with the sync process. However, this corrupts the previous completed backup, so if your iPhone does tank out, you won’t be able to restore it to any previous states.

If there were only a way to temporarily disable and enable the iTunes backup process.

First, a little background info: With the very first release of the iPhone software (v1.0.0), the backup used to copy over just the SMS, bookmarks, and small amounts of data from here and there. It was an incremental backup and usually didn’t take more than a few seconds. With the 2.0 software update, however, if there is any change in any application or service, iTunes will make a full image of the iPhone file system (excluding music and other media). This amounts to around 250MB for the iPhone file system plus whatever other applications you might have installed. Why this not an incremental backup, I don’t know.

So my research for the solution lead me to disabling iTunes backup completely. It involves a Terminal hack, where you need to quit iTunes, launch a Terminal session, paste the following code below into the Terminal window, and hit return:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true

The backup process should now be completely disabled and you won’t be troubled anymore. If you need to backup again, use that same string of text with the value set to ‘false’ instead of ‘true’.

An easy process that 95% of you will be able to do right?

Thankfully, a crafty developer over at MicroSECONDS has wrapped that little bit of Terminal trickery into a GUI application called<span
