BUT, even though you’re not fighting with knots, you may run into fighting your JayBird headset due to not being able to control audio tracks via the headset.  This wouldn’t sway my decision to not recommend, but it can be aggravating when you have to manage your tracks through your device versus tapping on already-in-place buttons on your earpiece.  Since the iPhone/Touch isn’t capable of this Bluetooth functionality yet, JayBird stepped up and provided extra capabilities with their own app!

JayBird BluTrax now lets you have full control over tracks (play, pause, fast forward, rewind and skip tracks).  It might take a little practice getting the feel for the sequence of going forward and back.  But you’ll get these down by using the practice guide within the app.  When the app is open, you’ll be able to take advantage of these features by selecting the playlists from your library.

$5 is the App Store may be a little steep, but you’re not going to be wrestling your pocket anymore.

Trapster, is a controversial but popular app that alerts you of nearby speed traps, red light cameras, speed cameras and the like.

It’s the high tech way to do the same thing people have been doing for years with CB radios and flashing headlights at other drivers to warn them of a speed trap ahead. Social networking meets radar detectors.

It is not as uncommon as it once was to see colleges participate and develop apps for their students.  Some college professors have even made it mandatory for certain courses that you own an iPhone or iPod Touch.  Forget the textbooks and goggles, get an iPhone to read, study, and listen to your course objectives in the palm of your hand.

An engineering student at West Virginia University has developed an app that has been adopted by the university to assist with the college life in Morgantown.  Rewarded with a prestigious $10,000 scholarship, Jared Crawford takes pride in his accomplishment.  iWVU takes a different approach by assisting with everyday questions, needs, and recreational information.  The biggest goal colleges strive to achieve is learning the best practices to connect with students on a daily basis.  iWVU can help catch the next bus or help a frosh find how to get to their next class.

With WVU having multiple campuses throughout the town, you can probably bet you’ll be traveling at some point.  Whether it’s by foot or bus, this app lets you view up-to-date bus schedules and also makes it easy to find the building where your class started 15 minutes ago.   Google maps pinpoints your location compared to your destination to give you a sense of direction.  And if you’re aware of the University’s PRT system, you’ll find hours of operation and map assistance.

Other highlighting features include searching for books in the library, stream U92 (student radio station), or see what’s on the menu at the different dorm dining halls.  You also have the ability to check out the course catalog when planning your upcoming semester.  The Emergency Service option also adds quick access to campus police and emergency care.

iWVU is an all-around app meant to target any type of student in Morgantown.  Whether it’s looking up what time the game starts or calming the nerves of a first-year student, good chance you’ll find it here.

Flickr has finally launched an official application for the iPhone. There has been no shortage of third-party applications that used Flickr’s pictures, but this app matches the look and feel of Flickr much more closely than any of them.

Despite having one of the most popular online photo services in the world, Flickr forced you to use their optimized website for browsing photos and email to upload photos. Both worked, but were extremely cumbersome to use.

The new Flickr app is seamless. Upon launching the app, the user is presented with a beautiful slideshow of photos from their Flickr friends.

An easily accesible upload button is in the top right hand corner. You can name your picture, give a description, tag it and choose what set to put it in. Privacy settings are cleary displayed on the upload page as well.

The main page search functionality also works well, with thumbnails being populated rather quickly. When you click on a photo, you get a larger version loaded in a different screen that allows you to swipe left and right to move between images.

You are required to authorize the app to use your Flickr account, which is done through Safari on the iPhone. After this, uploads to your Flickr account will be handled directly through the app with no further authorization requests.

Obviously, the Flickr iPhone app requires that its user have an active Flickr account. If you do not have an account, Flickr for iPhone will launch Safari and guide you through the necessary steps for creating an account.

Now that the dust is somewhat starting to settle regarding the drama circling around Apple rejecting Google Voice, a new headline is making news. Close to three months after submission, Apple has approved Tokumi’s Line 2 that carries a lot of simularities as Google Voice.

 A second virtual line can be added to your iPhone that includes voicemail and call history. This app enables users to keep personal and business contacts seperate. As with Google Voice, you can make cheaper international calls with Line 2 starting at $.02 per minute.

With Line 2 showing parallel features, this could raise more tention between Google and its fight against thier app-rejection.  Line2 offers 800 numbers, a local number or transfer existing number.  You will also find a number keypad as you would suspect.

Although these two apps look pretty close, one of the differences we did notcie was there is no SMS option avaliable.  Line2 also works over the celluar network and not just Wi-Fi.

Bottom line is, this could be a great alternative to Google Voice until it is released.  Be able to manage your personal world vs. your business use.  And for only $.99 in the App Store, you really can’t complain.

DirecTV, which supplies signal to five flat screens in my house, has just announced the NFL Mobile app. It doesn’t go live until September 13th, but you can download it now.

Once working, the app will let you watch live streams of all NFL Sunday Ticket football games, including the Red Zone channel. The Red Zone channel changes from game to game as the ball gets inside an opponent’s 20 yard line while a narrator explains just what’s going on.

The app also will display scores, statistics for players and teams, as well as video clips and highlights from each game. So far there has been no word as to whether video streaming will be available on 3G as well as Wi-Fi, but we’ll know soon enough.

For the privilege of using this free app, you need to plunk down $379.95 for programming. The NFL Season Ticket will run you $299.95 but that’s not good enough to run the app. Additionally you’ll need to toss in another $80 to buy the SuperFan package which gives you games in high-definition, stats and the Red Zone Channel, making the NFL Mobile app the most expensive free app in the world.

If you have DirecTV and an iPhone or iPod touch, you need to go and download the DirecTV app. With all the added functionality, you’ll feel much better about paying your monthly bill.
