With Apple trying to make up for lost ground after no camera was present on the new iPod Touch, showing what this puppy can do on the gaming platform could give chills to the hardcore gamers. With over 20,000 game and enteritainment apps showing up in the App Store, should the grandfathers Nintendo and Sony feel any threat? I’m sure it’s crossed their minds once or twice.

After letting the dust settle after another iPhone shell hit the shelves, I figured it was time I paid more attention to the buzz. As of now, it would be like pulling teeth to convince me to switch from my slider case that I currently use religiously. Even though after watching, this demonstration levels the playing field with other popular shells. You could probably bet Tech21 has caught onto something promising with their indestructible-like casing. I’ll let the video do the talking…

Apple aims new ad at sports enthusiasts

Apple has hit their target audience again by advertising their features for sports nuts. In their latest commercial you get a glimpse of:

GolfshotGPS ($29.99) – Comes packed with over 15,000 courses to help you better judge the distance to the front, center, and back of the green. You will be able to touch anywhere on the aerial view map for the hole you are playing and receive distances to that point and from that point to the green.

MLB at Bat 2009 ($9.99) – For 10 bucks you are able to listen to audio of any live game (home or away announcers). At Bat will also stream two games a day that are viewable over 3G and Wi-Fi. Get live scores, video highlights, current standings, and much more.

TouchSports Tennis 2009 ($0.99) – For all you gamers, this is reasonably priced for quality of play you receive. Play a match anytime you want by selecting from three courts to play on. The 3D graphics are quite impressive.

New TomTom car kit video released

TomTom is leading us to believe they are getting closer to releasing its car kit after providing a promo video. We know now the kit will be able to charge your device, provide an enhanced GPS signal, added speaker, audio-out function, and third-party app support.

But the main question still remains. How much is this puppy going to cost us? Rumors have been circling around the $200 range (combined with software). This will be the key that makes or breaks the TomTom integration to the iPhone. However, they do have the rumored compatibility with the iPod Touch in their favor.

After Navigon and others have released their iPhone based releases I have, like most people, waited patiently to see what TomTom will bring to the table. So far so good. But, we’re not out of the woods yet.

Movement

Now that the rumors have surfaced about iTunes 9’s features, anything less will leave many disappointed. One of the most anticipated functions that will have me updating immediately will be the ability to organize my app layout via iTunes. As of now, I feel like I’m playing chess because of all the futuristic outcomes I have to think about when I decide to move an app. I can’t wait until the day the pain is gone. But for some, that day has arrived.

All you Mac users can now start experimenting with Movement. This simple app is what iTunes users have been wishing for since day one.

Here is how it works:

Simply connect your device and click “Read Apps” to display your current order. Now you can rearrange your apps however you choose and click “Write Apps.” You will then have to disconnect and respring/reboot.

Requirements:

Your device must be Jailbroken.
Is only compatable with Macs (10.5 and above).

Security hole found in 3.0

A new security flaw has surfaced concerning deleted email on your decive running 3.0 or 3.1 firmware. A video has been posted that reveals the issue. If you think your email has been deleted once you delete it from your iPhone/Touch, think again.

During the demonstration, the user deletes an email from their POP account. Once you delete the email go back to the home screen and slide over to the search spotlight. After you type the subject of the “deleted” email, you will see two of them listed. The first time you try to open one of them up, mail will try to open but crashes. However, on the second try you will be able to successfully open the content of that “deleted” email.

This is not only happening with POP accounts but with IMAP. The flaw resides withing 3.0 and 3.1 firmware. Even if the email is deleted from the server, it will not clear from the cache. Obviously, the process 3.0 caches is assumed that it helps speed up the searches but also is leaving some doors open.

If one is already paranoid enough by carrying email on their iPhone, this will send them overboard. Sensitive data may still lay hidden under the covers until Apple releases their next fix.

TomTom GPS for iPhone

There have been a plethora of GPS apps released for the iPhone lately, but none as anticipated as TomTom for iPhone. Included, the TomTom Car Kit, what appears to be the coolest car mount I’ve ever seen. The kit offers secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions and hands-free calling, while charging your iPhone at the same time.

According to leaked pricing, one retailer claims the TomTom will be $193.75 or thereabouts. If the $194 price for the TomTom iPhone app is accurate, it makes this smartphone navigation system a bit pricey. You can get a standalone TomTom GPS unit for about $149 on Amazon. TomTom hasn’t confirmed, nor denied the report.

And there are still a few unanswered questions about TomTom’s iPhone app also. It is yet unclear how the maps update process will be done, how well the app will integrate with iPhone’s limited multi-tasking abilities, and how users will download the 1GB app.

More details should be available though as the application approaches public release sometime later this summer.

Every now and then I need to pinch myself just to make sure I’m not living with the Jetsons. Although, the power of the iPhone has brought us closer to that day especially with the invasion of home improvement apps. It would only be normal to call someone crazy who says they can open their garage door, adjust their thermostat, and turn on their font porch light from their phone while on their way home from work or laying on their couch. I wouldn’t believe it either, until coming across Z-Wave.

You will need to have client software to control your Z-Wave devices remotely, such as X10 Commander or iPhone-iTouch Z-Wave Automation Edition, that can now take your home to another level by having two key components: a server piece which runs on your PC, and a client piece that will run on your iPhone/Touch. Z-Wave has opened a new door to managing home electronics that can communicate right from your hand. All your devices will run off an integrated wireless network, with no extra cabling needed. This also makes it easy to pair new devices if you should add to your home improvement.

Pizza Hut has been racking up the downloads in the App Store since releasing their new free app a few weeks ago. After topping 100,000 downloads users have been able to customize their favorite pizza, place an order of the famous breadsticks, and top it off with a basket of wings. This is a pretty cool concept and will most likely open the doors for competitors to follow. You will also find a virtual fridge to hold all of your coupons and be able to attach them with your order. Before you start, you must have an account setup with Pizza Hut to complete your order.
