id="more-1754">

There are a few things you need to keep in mind before taking the plunge. Although this is a great feature to have, the price may be a little steep for some coming in at $3.99. Depending on how often you change up your ringtones or the value of simplicity, you might not even flinch considering this app is kinda in a league of its own. However, you can decide for yourselfby testing out the trial offer.

You also need to install RockApp to obtain a license that will give you access to AnyRing. This should install along with the initial AnyRing download. Although a little time consuming, not a showstopper.

The other drawback for some is you need to Jailbreak to access this app through Cydia. Sorry, you gotta give at some point.

Overall, a standout app for the ringtone junkies.
Sites like I-phone-home have been discussing this in detail, leading to a post on the Dev-Team Blog about one provider in particular: Pinch Media.

Pinch Media, however, is not the only tracking provider: on the iPhone alone there are three other companies: Flurry, Medialets, and Mobclix.

One provider in particular that has caught their attention: Pinch Media.

Being an approved app, it must first ask you for permission to use your location. If you tap “Don’t Allow”, it will ask you again in about a minute, the next time its ad changes. So you either stop using this app (because it pesters you so much about the location question), or you finally submit and tap “OK”. From that point on, your location and path info (your actual physical path through your area each time you launch the app) belongs to Pinch Media, Inc.

Once an iPhone application is Pinch Media enabled, the following information is stored locally:

iPhone’s unique ID

iPhone Model

OS Version

Application version

If the application is cracked/pirated

If your iPhone is jailbroken

time & date you start the application

time & date you close the application

your current latitude & longitude

your gender (if facebook enabled)

your birth month (if facebook enabled)

your birth year (if facebook enabled)

Your data is continually tracked and every use of the application recorded for the life of that application on your phone. Once you have a reliable connection, the information stored locally is sent in automatically to the mother-ship. At no point are you told what the Pinch Media enabled application is doing and at no time are you given an option to “opt-out”. Pinch Media explains itself here.

Pinch Media, however, is not the only tracking provider on the iPhone. There are three other companies: Flurry, Medialets, and Mobclix.

Developers integrate these systems for much the same reason people use Google Analytics: to better understand how their customers use their products. Not all applications using analytics on the back-end are to be feared. For the most part, the data being recorded is anonymous and helps the developers make better apps. The problem is that, as of today, there’s no way to know which apps are the safe ones. Fortunately, for Jailbreakers, there’s a solution, PrivaCy.

PrivaCy is a Settings Panel application that allows you to “selectively opt-out of sending anonymous usage statistics” to certain providers such as; Flurry, Medialets, Mobclix and Pinch Media.

PrivaCy can be installed by going into the Cydia section of the Cydia app (or, search for PrivaCy in Cydia). Once installed, you can then go into the stock Settings application > PrivaCy and choose to turn on/off the ability to send anonymous usage statistics for Flurry, Medialets, Mobclix and Pinch Media.

PrivaCy was developed as a team effort with Flurry, Medialets, Mobclix and Pinch Media. They not only gave their blessings, but also their technical expertise in disabling their systems.

Related posts:

<a

There isn’t much more we could ask for, however, there’s always room for improvement. Which in this case, Attachment Saver cures one of my requests. Through Cydia, you can now download an extension that allows you to download any email attachment directly to your iPhone. So now you can download videos, pdf’s, office docs, or anything else that lands in your inbox.

As nice as this option is, there are a few stipulations:

You must be running 3.0 firmware or higher

You will also need to install iFile via Cydia. This is one of the best system navigators to search for files on your device. You will be able to find the attachment downloads at private/var/mobile/library/attachments

And lastly, you’ll need to cough up $2 to download Attachment Saver.

Related posts:

<a

According to the most recent information from Pinch Media, 8.43% of iPhone users have jailbroken their phone. Of course, looking at the complete picture that is a small number of users, especially when you look at the percentage of non-jailbroken users — 91.57%.<a

Knowing that, one cannot help but wonder if the increase has had anything to do with the recent Google Voice controversy and the addition of GV Mobile in Cydia (Jailbreakers version of the App Store).

Fox News recently did a piece where they showcase a few of the features most people jailbreak for. Although barely toching the surface of what jailbreaking does for the iPhone, they seemed to give a good idea of what it is and the value of doing it.

Watch the Fox News video below.

They go on to point out that jailbreaking can be undone by using iTunes to restore the iPhone to its factory settings. Good information for the timid jailbreaker.

They only issue I have is they mention that jailbroken apps can not be deleted just hidden. This is incorrect. You can delete these apps in 2 simple ways. The first way is to launch Cydia, navigate to the Manage section, and remove from there. The second option, which is the simplest in my opinion, is to use the jailbreak app CyDelete. CyDelete is an application that allows you to delete Jailbreak/Cydia applications right from the page the App icon is on. Just like you would any application from the App Store. See <a

The EFF contend the jailbreaking of the iPhone’s software does not violate the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Apple’s full response can be reviewed

Apple alleges that through jailbreaking, the phone’s baseband processor (BBP) is exposed and can be used by hackers to disrupt carrier networks, as well as change the phones Exclusive Chip Idetnification (ECID) to hide or clone the phones idenitiy. Changing the EICD would enable anonymous calls (think terrorists or drug dealers) or even worse, free calls, although most GSM carriers rely on the SIM for identity and billing considerations.

Regardless, Apple is making a play to lock out competition and impose (ever changing) limits on products that have been lawfully purchased. Let’s hope the iPhone community continues to fight back.

Related posts:

<a
