How to Sync Your iPhone With Multiple Computers

Apple only allows you to sync your iPhone with one iTunes library at a time. When you attempt to sync your iPhone with another computer, you get the familiar, “The iPhone is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?” message.

But what if you want to use your home computer to sync pictures, music, videos and podcasts and your office computer to sync calendar and contact information?

It’s basically a 7 step process which takes some very simple hacking skills.

Step 1 – On your main computer, browse to your iTunes music folder and double click the file named iTunes Music Library.xml to open it in Notepad.

Step 2 – Write down the value of the Library Persistent ID key. (It should look something like 20F830293962CBA4) Take care not to modify the file before closing.

Step 3 - On your secondary computer, browse to your iTunes music folder and create a backup of iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library.itl. Select both files and press Control+c then Control+v on your keyboard. This will make a backup copy of the files.

Step 4 – Double click to open iTunes Music Library.xml in notepad. Make note of the current Library Persistent ID then change the Library Persistent ID key to the one we wrote down from Step Two and save the file.

Step 5 – Now we will need to open iTunes Library.itl using a HexEditor. You can download HexEdit from here.

Step 6 – Once you have opened iTunes Library.itl using HexEdit, search for the old Library Persistent ID we replaced in Step Four. Do this by clicking Find from the Menubar. Make sure to select Hex as your search type.

Step 7 – Once found, replace the old Library Persistent ID with the one from Part Two and save the file.

You can now launch iTunes and connect your iPhone to the new computer for syncing. Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Notice if now select Manually manage music and videos from the Summary Tab you will no longer be prompted to erase your data, nor will the files on your iPhone be grayed out.

Navigon brings text-to-speeh in latest 1.2 update

We keep throwing our needs and wants at Navigon, and they’re doing nothing but hitting them out of the park. And that goes for their latest 1.2 update. With aggressive releases that add features that consumers are looking for, Navigon keeps stealing the attention of the iPhone navigation community. With their first shot at releasing their app, they have proven even though they are rookies in the App Store that they can still be counted on by building on an already solid foundation.

You knew text-to-speech was probably coming at some point, but not this soon. This concept allows you to act as you would with most stand-alone GPS devices by listening to directions without having to focus 100% on the iPhone itself. Other small but much appreciated features that are included in the update are integrated iPod controls, auto day and night display adjustment, and the ability to share your location via email.

The battle of the navigation apps are in a pretty tight race with Navigon and TomTom at the top. Even though Navigon didn’t come out with all features available in their initial release, they have not disappointed in keeping up with their rivals. I’ve in no means gave up on TomTom, they have also been quite impressive. Once they do release their GPS -boosted kit, they will have a chance to sit at the top. Since most consumers aren’t going to fork out the cash to give both apps a test run, quality and consumer assurance gains more importance when making the on-the-fence decision.

Earlier, Navigon claimed that thier price would rise to $99 after the August discount. So far we have only seen the price rise to $89. One could probably assume the reasoning after TomTom’s initial release price hit the market at $99.

What’s new in iPhone OS 3.1

Yesterday was like Christmas for a lot of iPhone/Touch gurus with one of the main announcements being that iPhone firmware 3.1 was available for download. There are a handful of new tweaks and improvements that we wanted to bring to your attention. If you are a 3GS owner, you will see all updates that were made avaliable. However, for 2G and 3G users, it is pointed out what couple features you will have to live without. As you can tell, there are no remarks about battery improvement. I guess we can’t be too greedy.

As always, Jailbreakers and unlockers stay away for now. Although it is safe to download iTunes9 but not OS 3.1.

Without further ado, iPhone OS 3.1:

Well I’m not real sure how you couldn’t be satisfied with today’s headlines. Whether you were excited to see Steve back on stage or anxious to download ringtones, I think there was satisfaction spread evenly. Even though we’re not going to get every little detail desired (cameraless iPod Touch), Apple has shot below par by introducing iTunes 9, 3.1 firmware, and new line of iPod Touch’s. Here’s a quick briefing of what you missed encase you couldn’t make it out to Cali for the day.

First up, iTunes 9. With the upgrade available for download today, you will be see changes to help enhance your App Store experience. With an added horizontal navigation bar added to each page, less time is spent jumping from viewing apps to searching for movies. And the best of iTunes 9 is being able to easily manage your apps on your device through iTunes. Additionally, you will now be able to specify what artists, genres, and playlist you would like to automatically sync.

iTunes LP will also be a new face to the community. Here’s Apples take:

“The visual experience of the record album returns with iTunes LP. Get a gorgeous, immersive version of select albums — right in your iTunes library. So while you listen to your favorite songs by your favorite artists, you can also five into beautiful animated lyrics and notes, performance videos, artists and band photos and more.”

Another road Apple has decided to take is selling ringtones. A little late on the draw, but better late then never. However, priced at $1.29, I’m not sure if that will fly or not. With most songs costing $.99, it would be hard pay more for a fraction of a song. But I’m open minded and will wait to see what kind of reaction Apple is given.

The bigger news of the day is the third generation iPod Touch. Unfortunately, no camera is included. However, there are some reasonable tradeoffs. A similar 3.1 update the iPhone will bounce up to will also appear for the Touch. A 50% speed improvement , OpenGL ES 2.0 for improved graphics, Genius App Recommendations, and voice control will be the selling points that drive you to make a step up to the third gen.. Not only will you have the options of the 8GB ($199) and 32GB ($299), but you’ll have a chance to get your hands on the granddaddy of them all, 64GB ($399)!!

iPhone users will also have the option to upgrade to 3.1 firmware. It’s recommended to upgrade iTunes beforehand. And to all you Jailbreakers and unlockers, I would advise to hold up until the coast is clear.

Navigon leaks iPhone cradle

With TomTom stealing most of the attention with their car kit bundle, it was only a matter of time that Navigon would bounce back with another headline. Sure enough, Navigon has released news via Facebook about their upcoming iPhone cradle that will compete with TomTom’s similar attachment. After beating TomTom to the punch by releasing their app in June ’09, they have produced solid reviews for all versions released (North America, Australia, and Europe). Even though all the details are still blurry, we do have a lead on what you can expect.

As seen above, Navigon will come standard with a suction cup mount but will also feature a charging cable so you never run dry. This cradle should not have an astronomical price tag due to the fact that there is no supplementary technology such as an integrated GPS chip or hands-free calling. Comparing TomTom’s roughly $100 unit, we would suspect much less.

Release date is still unclear, but one would suspect to keep your eyes pealed for October’ish since that is the target for TomTom’s anticipated car kit that will complete the circle.

Wyse PocketCloud. a network manager’s best friend

A surprising (and very welcomed) app is available in the app store from Wyse named PocketCloud. How is that for an opening line? Does it grab your attention? No? Not interested? No, this app isn’t very sexy, and quite frankly, it has zero mass appeal. You will not see this app on an iPhone Commercial, no Diggs, no attention from the media. This app has no place in pop culture. In the commercial, the PC guy will be using this, not the trendy and cool mac guy.

I can tell you that, from an IT Professional’s perspective, I would purchase an iPhone just for this app. This app is my new best friend; and just in time for a well earned vacation next week. To sum it up, this app does remote desktop better than any other app available today; throw in VMware support, and you have an extraordinary tool for network support staff that can easily jusify the cost of an iPhone and data plan for yourself and your staff. $29.99 is stiff, even for a tech-savvy person that wants to control his home or office PC, but not for an IT Pro that is working 24 hours a day already. What this app means to me, is that I can quickly (as in as little as 90 seconds with good 3G) login to my Cisco IPSec VPN (that post is coming in two weeks) and access my Windows Servers and VMs. The client connects flawlessly (and stays connected!), the screen scales effortlessly using the iphone multi-touch; it has the typical pop-up keyboard, and finite mouse control utility (easy right-clicks). Scrolling is fast and smooth. Mouse selection using your finger takes some practice, but that is understandable. You can only connect to one session at a time. WiFi is better of course, but access over 3G is damn good. Considering the name, and the obvious investment from VMware, I expect more to come in later releases, although it is highly recommended at version 1.0 (repeat that to yourself a few times, you will not hear it often). Actual usage is fast and reliable. You can solve problems, get things done, and get back to what little life your job permits. Can a geek make a higher endorsement?

If you don’t know who Wyse is, you’re wasting your time and do not need this app. These apps will do nicely for you.

PocketCloud supports SSL and has limited support for RSA 2-factor authentication. PocketCloud fits into an established VMware View host environment and does not require any special setup or software installed. The app will run on the Touch and the iPhone, and supports MS Server 2003 and later sever versions, as well as XP and later desktop operating systems (home versions are not supported). Although I’ll primarily use this remotely, this is a tool that will prove to be indispensable to on-site support staff that roam about an office building or a factory (especially at $229 for a touch).

PocketCloud integrates with an available Windows (32-bit only) host-based agent that provides advanced capabilities such as Thin-Browser: an enhanced, server-side browser capability, enabling full access to websites for rich and interactive content such as Flash, Silverlight, and Java, and ActiveX content. The Thin-Browser is available from the options screen when connected to a Windows host running the agent and provides a web browsing experience that is much more complete and robust than Safari; but despite the Wyse claim, is not noticeably faster. Regardless, when you need to access Flash or ActiveX content, you can. And that is definitely a pickup.

The PocketCloud App is available for $29.99 from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/. PocketCloud Windows agent can be downloaded for free from www.wyse.com/iphone.

Toktumi’s Line 2 gets Apple approval

Now that the dust is somewhat starting to settle regarding the drama circling around Apple rejecting Google Voice, a new headline is making news. Close to three months after submission, Apple has approved Tokumi’s Line 2 that carries a lot of simularities as Google Voice.

A second virtual line can be added to your iPhone that includes voicemail and call history. This app enables users to keep personal and business contacts seperate. As with Google Voice, you can make cheaper international calls with Line 2 starting at $.02 per minute.

With Line 2 showing parallel features, this could raise more tention between Google and its fight against thier app-rejection. Line2 offers 800 numbers, a local number or transfer existing number. You will also find a number keypad as you would suspect.

Although these two apps look pretty close, one of the differences we did notcie was there is no SMS option avaliable. Line2 also works over the celluar network and not just Wi-Fi.

Bottom line is, this could be a great alternative to Google Voice until it is released. Be able to manage your personal world vs. your business use. And for only $.99 in the App Store, you really can’t complain.

Apple to offer pre-made ringtones

Jackpot. This is a move Apple needed to make to start capturing the ringtone market and make the iPhone more customizable. After seeing third parties distribute applications that help a user turn thier favorite song into a thier ringtone (such as AnyRing that we reviewed earlier in the week), it was a no-brainer for Apple to start capitalizing on this concept. Even though some would say Apple crashed this party a little late, I guess it’s better late than never. It would also be a safe bet to say that you will be able to purchase the tones through iTunes on your PC/Mac and on your iPhone itself.

Sources have informed CNET that Apple has obtained the rights to distribute ringtones for iPhone users. They are quickly trying to make this dream a reality in time for next weeks “rock and roll” themed press conference, Sept. 9th. It is unclear how much Apple will charge for a single ringtone, but you probably could guess it won’t be outrageous. I mean they charge anywhere from $.69 to $1.29 a song. You would think a snippet would be less than the song itself.

AnyRing – Set your ringtone from iPod collection

Yep, that’s right. Easily set any song that you have from your endless pit of iPod music for your ringtone on the fly. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t give you this choice as an out-of-the-box option. But for those of you who like to bump to your favorite jams every time you get a call, this is any easy road to take.

There are some solid customizable features that make this an eye catcher. Within AnyRing, you can select the start and end point in the song to play when the ringtone is activated. You can also specify the ringtone you want to be played for the selected contact.

There are a few things you need to keep in mind before taking the plunge. Although this is a great feature to have, the price may be a little steep for some coming in at $3.99. Depending on how often you change up your ringtones or the value of simplicity, you might not even flinch considering this app is kinda in a league of its own. However, you can decide for yourselfby testing out the trial offer.

You also need to install RockApp to obtain a license that will give you access to AnyRing. This should install along with the initial AnyRing download. Although a little time consuming, not a showstopper.

The other drawback for some is you need to Jailbreak to access this app through Cydia. Sorry, you gotta give at some point.

Overall, a standout app for the ringtone junkies.
