When you attempt to sync your iPhone with another computer, you get the familiar, “The iPhone is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?” message.

But what if you want to use your home computer to sync pictures, music, videos and podcasts and your office computer to sync calendar and contact information?

It’s basically a 7 step process which takes some very simple hacking skills.

Step 1 – On your main computer, browse to your iTunes music folder and double click the file named iTunes Music Library.xml to open it in Notepad.

Step 2 – Write down the value of the Library Persistent ID key. (It should look something like 20F830293962CBA4) Take care not to modify the file before closing.

Step 3 - On your secondary computer, browse to your iTunes music folder and create a backup of iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library.itl. Select both files and press Control+c then Control+v on your keyboard. This will make a backup copy of the files.

Step 4 – Double click to open iTunes Music Library.xml in notepad. Make note of the current Library Persistent ID then change the Library Persistent ID key to the one we wrote down from Step Two and save the file.

Step 5 – Now we will need to open iTunes Library.itl using a HexEditor. You can download HexEdit from here.

Step 6 – Once you have opened iTunes Library.itl using HexEdit, search for the old Library Persistent ID we replaced in Step Four. Do this by clicking Find from the Menubar. Make sure to select Hex as your search type.

Step 7 – Once found, replace the old Library Persistent ID with the one from Part Two and save the file.

<img

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Notice if now select Manually manage music and videos from the Summary Tab you will no longer be prompted to erase your data, nor will the files on your iPhone be grayed out.

First up, iTunes 9. With the upgrade available for download today, you will be see changes to help enhance your App Store experience. With an added horizontal navigation bar added to each page, less time is spent jumping from viewing apps to searching for movies. And the best of iTunes 9 is being able to easily manage your apps on your device through iTunes. Additionally, you will now be able to specify what artists, genres, and playlist you would like to automatically sync.

iTunes LP will also be a new face to the community. Here’s Apples take:

“The visual experience of the record album returns with iTunes LP. Get a gorgeous, immersive version of select albums — right in your iTunes library. So while you listen to your favorite songs by your favorite artists, you can also five into beautiful animated lyrics and notes, performance videos, artists and band photos and more.”

Another road Apple has decided to take is selling ringtones. A little late on the draw, but better late then never. However, priced at $1.29, I’m not sure if that will fly or not. With most songs costing $.99, it would be hard pay more for a fraction of a song. But I’m open minded and will wait to see what kind of reaction Apple is given.

The bigger news of the day is the third generation iPod Touch. Unfortunately, no camera is included. However, there are some reasonable tradeoffs. A similar 3.1 update the iPhone will bounce up to will also appear for the Touch. A 50% speed improvement , OpenGL ES 2.0 for improved graphics, Genius App Recommendations, and voice control will be the selling points that drive you to make a step up to the third gen.. Not only will you have the options of the 8GB ($199) and 32GB ($299), but you’ll have a chance to get your hands on the granddaddy of them all, 64GB ($399)!!

iPhone users will also have the option to upgrade to 3.1 firmware. It’s recommended to upgrade iTunes beforehand. And to all you Jailbreakers and unlockers, I would advise to hold up until the coast is clear.

Wyse named PocketCloud. How is that for an opening line? Does it grab your attention? No? Not interested? No, this app isn’t very sexy, and quite frankly, it has zero mass appeal. You will not see this app on an iPhone Commercial, no Diggs, no attention from the media. This app has no place in pop culture. In the commercial, the PC guy will be using this, not the trendy and cool mac guy.

I can tell you that, from an IT Professional’s perspective, I would purchase an iPhone just for this app. This app is my new best friend; and just in time for a well earned vacation next week. To sum it up, this app does remote desktop better than any other app available today; throw in VMware support, and you have an extraordinary tool for network support staff that can easily jusify the cost of an iPhone and data plan for yourself and your staff. $29.99 is stiff, even for a tech-savvy person that wants to control his home or office PC, but not for an IT Pro that is working 24 hours a day already. What this app means to me, is that I can quickly (as in as little as 90 seconds with good 3G) login to my Cisco IPSec VPN (that post is coming in two weeks) and access my Windows Servers and VMs. The client connects flawlessly (and stays connected!), the screen scales effortlessly using the iphone multi-touch; it has the typical pop-up keyboard, and finite mouse control utility (easy right-clicks). Scrolling is fast and smooth. Mouse selection using your finger takes some practice, but that is understandable. You can only connect to one session at a time. WiFi is better of course, but access over 3G is damn good. Considering the name, and the obvious investment from VMware, I expect more to come in later releases, although it is highly recommended at version 1.0 (repeat that to yourself a few times, you will not hear it often). Actual usage is fast and reliable. You can solve problems, get things done, and get back to what little life your job permits. Can a geek make a higher endorsement?

If you don’t know who Wyse is, you’re wasting your time and do not need this app. These apps will do nicely for you.

PocketCloud supports SSL and has limited support for RSA 2-factor authentication. PocketCloud fits into an established VMware View host environment and does not require any special setup or software installed. The app will run on the Touch and the iPhone, and supports MS Server 2003 and later sever versions, as well as XP and later desktop operating systems (home versions are not supported). Although I’ll primarily use this remotely, this is a tool that will prove to be indispensable to on-site support staff that roam about an office building or a factory (especially at $229 for a touch).

PocketCloud integrates with an available Windows (32-bit only) host-based agent that provides advanced capabilities such as Thin-Browser: an enhanced, server-side browser capability, enabling full access to websites for rich and interactive content such as Flash, Silverlight, and Java, and ActiveX content. The Thin-Browser is available from the options screen when connected to a Windows host running the agent and provides a web browsing experience that is much more complete and robust than Safari; but despite the Wyse claim, is not noticeably faster. Regardless, when you need to access Flash or ActiveX content, you can. And that is definitely a pickup.

The PocketCloud App is available for $29.99 from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/. PocketCloud Windows agent can be downloaded for free from <a

But in most cases the apps themselves cost at least a few bucks. Enter TextPlus, a free, ad-supported app that offers unlimited texting.

With GOGII’s free application, users can send completely free text messages between each other, create and manage group conversations with as many people as they want, or opt for a one-to-one communication.

An app for the iPhone that enables you to send text messages for free? Really? Yes really! And not just for the iPhone, there’s an additional killer feature, the ability to send text messages from the iPod Touch as well!

iPod Touch users need not feel left out of the free texting bliss as TextPlus will feel right at home even without cellular access. As long as they have a mobile phone that can receive SMS messages, they can link their number with textPlus. (A one-time verification code needs to be confirmed.) From that point forward, conversations that are initiated within textPlus will be routed to the app; regular SMS messages will continue to arrive on your mobile phone.

With Group Messaging, TextPlus allows you to send a text message to multiple recipients, and their replies will stay grouped together, making the app function in a way like a chat room.

textPlus is super simple to use too. Once installed, open it up and click the familiar compose option to select a contact (or enter any 10 digit phone number), or two or three, and start typing and texting away.

When you’re ready, hit send. Your message is conveyed over WiFi and appears as an SMS message from GOGII (60611). You can then wait for a response, or return to the conversations page to start new chats and view updates – as they happen – to existing threads.

textPlus doesn’t require that you enter your own phone number to use the application, but if you do, you can opt to receive standard SMS notifications (though this kind of defeats the purpose), or participate in conversations started by others.

If there were to be a downside to textPlus, it would be that your friends who aren’t using the app see an incoming message from a foreign number with your name and GOGII included, instead of a standard SMS message from you. App users might also miss the fact that their textPlus chats stay inside of the app, and don’t get included with your other SMS communications to contacts.

Realistically, however, those all might seem like small sacrifices when given the opportunity to text to any contact or number free of charge.

Since Gogii’s TextPlus app was released in June, over 800,000 users have sent northward of 80 million text messages with those daily averages also quickly going north.

textPlus is super simple to use too. But it IS!” are the words I giggled to myself as I sat on the couch controlling the media center with my iPhone. I quickly realize that this app goes way beyond what I was expecting and decide to immediately share my discovery with you.

Mobile Air Mouse instantly transforms your iPhone or iPod touch into an air mouse, track-pad, and wireless remote for your computer! Sit back and surf the web, browse your photo library or control your music player from the comfort of your couch.

There are several reasons you would want to turn your iPhone into a remote control over your keyboard and mouse: ease, convenience, and a broad range of control. The gesture mode of navigation takes advantage of the iPhone’s accelerometer to move your mouse across the screen. Using the accelerometer to control mouse gestures is comparable to using the controls for a Nintendo Wii – fun, but not always practical. The touch-pad mode keeps your arm stationary while you trace the mouse trajectory on the iPhone face with your finger.

<a

Before using the app, you need to install a small application, Air Mouse Server, on your computer which manages the connection and controls many of the mouse and keyboard settings.

Suddenly your iPhone becomes an essential part of any home theater PC and a presenters best friend. Using an innovative application notification system, the iPhone will always know what applications are running at any time and show the appropriate keys for that program, providing you with a single screen for controlling ALL your media and web applications.

App highlights:

Accelerometer based mouse

Track-pad (full screen vertical and landscape modes)

Media keys & Web keys

Application notifications – Remote keyboard with modifier, function and arrow keys

Programmable hotkeys (can be set to run a program or keyboard combination)

Scroll pad

Multi-touch gestures (scroll & right click)

Password protection

Custom sensitivity settings

Foreign language keyboards

Supports Bonjour or static IP

No screen size limitation. id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 206px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">iPhone users have quite a few Internet radio apps from which to choose. Pocket Tunes Radio from NormSoft sets itself apart from by allowing you to listen to many stations not compatible with other apps. Most significantly, Pocket Tunes Radio offers satellite radio station compatibility through the XM and Sirius Web sites (provided, of course, you’re a subscriber to those satellite radio services).

Like other Internet radio apps, Pocket Tunes Radio provides a directory of Internet radio stations sorted by category. There are hundreds of preprogrammed stations divided among a few dozen categories. Fortunately, the app’s search feature can help you navigate through all of the options; you can even mark favorite stations for quick access. If you hear something you like, you can search the iTunes catalog from within Pocket Tunes Radio, transferring over to the iTunes Store to buy the song.

Don’t expect CD quality audio from Pocket Tunes Radio—most of these stations are heavily compressed, though I found them to be fine for casual listening. And the low bit rates come with an advantage: you’ll be able to listen to stations on connections on not only Wi-Fi but also 3G and even EDGE.

Pocket Tunes Radio distinguishes itself with a built-in browser that lets you access many Web-based radio stations, including those which require a username and password like Sirius and XM satellite radio stations. Until Sirius XM releases an iPhone app, this is your only way to take advantage of the Internet streaming component of a satellite radio subscription.

I tested this feature using Sirius, and it works quite well. You’ll have to initially navigate the Web site to enter your username/password, but once you mark the station as a favorite, returning to it is a breeze. The built-in browser also allows you to surf the Internet while you continue to play your music since, like all Internet radio apps, background operation isn’t possible.

With plenty of free Internet radio apps available, how do you justify Pocket Tunes Radio’s $7.99 price tag? It comes down to whether or not you want access to radio stations the others can’t receive. For me, it was an easy decision because for now, Pocket Tunes Radio is the only way to stream satellite radio to your iPhone or iPod touch.

jailed 46 people when a mobile phone rang in his New York courtroom and no one would admit responsibility. So a company called Two Forty Four a.m. created Locale. Problem solved. But not for us; you see the Locale App is for Android only. And this has introduced a totally new and uncomfortable sensation for iPhone users: App Envy.

I am disappointed that this little app is not available for the iPhone, but I believe it will prove to be good for us over time by introducing some real competition. The app itself is amazingly simple in concept: create “situations” based on the Android phone profiles (ringers, volume, wallpaper, WiFi settings, etc.) that are activated based on your location via the built-in GPS. So, as you roam about your day moving from place to place, your phone will automatically set the correct profile. No need to turn off your ringer in church, go ahead turn on and grab the free WiFi at your favorite lunch stop, and can even turn-off WiFi or other power drains during low-battery times. Very imaginative. Very iPhone like. I’m not even going to mention the SDK from the author which will take this little App to even greater heights.

Why is this app not available for the iPhone? Simple: No profiles. As this App gains in popularity, some one might be able to pull together some of the features and make a similar app; but without native profiles built-in, I doubt it would be possible to replicate the effectiveness. Please note that RIM has used sound profiles for years on the Blackberry; so this concept is hardly new and one the Apple should have included in the original version.

Locale is not a “Killer App” which will drive iPhone users to Android; but it is a great reminder that Apple/iPhone industry has not totally cornered the market on innovation. And lets hope a little competition will push the iPhone industry to stay on the leading edge. And congratulations to the folks at Two Forty Four a.m. for a truly remarkable app.

No related posts.

Related posts brought to you by <a
