PwnageTool? Redsn0w? Yellowsn0w? Ultrasn0w? Id0NtKn0w! If you’re new to iPhone jailbreaking, I’m sure you’re confused by all these terms.

Before explaining the terms one by one, let’s make sure we understand what jailbreak is and the difference between jailbreak & unlock. Then we’ll take a look at all the other terms you may of heard about when jailbreaking and unlocking.

What’s Jailbreak & Unlock

Jailbreaking is a process that allows iPhone and iPod Touch users to run unofficial code on their devices bypassing Apple‘s official distribution mechanism, the App Store. Once jailbroken, iPhone users are able to download many applications previously unavailable through the App Store via unofficial installers such as Cydia and Icy. It’s estimated that 4 million (out of 40 million) iPods and iPhones are jailbroken.

Unlocking refers to the process by which your iPhone can use SIM card from any carrier. For instance, iPhone is exclusively distributed by AT&T in US. In other words, it is locked and iPhone user in US can only use AT&T sim card. By going through the unlock process, your iPhone is allowed to use any carrier.

Jailbreaking Tools

Redsn0w – Redsn0w is the latest generation of Jailbreak tool offered by iPhone Dev Team that supports jailbreaking on iPhone OS 3.0. It supports all models of iPhone including iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS, as well as iPod Touch. Both Windows and Mac version are available. Redsn0w comes with built-in utility to unlock iPhone 2G. Jailbreaking using redsn0w is very straightforward and it is considered as the most user-friendly jailbreak utility iPhone. Redsn0w is also considered as a replacement of QuickPwn.

QuickPwn – Developed by iPhone Dev Team, QuickPwn is a jailbreak utility for iPhone 2G & 3G. It supports jailbreaking up to firmware 2.2.1. Both Windows and Mac versions are available. It also comes with built-in utility to unlock iPhone 2G. QuickPwn is considered as the most user-friendly utility for iPhone Jailbreak and now replaced by redsn0w.

PwnageTool – Also, developed by iPhone Dev Team, PwnageTool is a jailbreak tool for Mac platform only. It supports jailbreaking on iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and firmware level up to 3.0. Same as QuickPwn, it also provides built-in option to unlock iPhone 2G. Compared with QuickPwn, for which it performs jailbreaking directly on iPhone, PwnageTool takes a different approach of jailbreak that it creates a custom firmware file (i.e. IPSW) for jailbreaking. PwnageTool is considered as more flexible as it allows the direct modification of firmware file.

Purplera1n – Purplera1n is an alternative of jailbreak tool to Redsn0w and Pwnagetool for iPhone 3GS only. It is developed by GeoHot, who is the guy that developed an unlock solution for the 1st generation iPhone dated back to 2007. Purplera1n supports both Windows and Mac.

Unlocking Tools

Yellowsn0w – Yellowsn0w is the 1st generation of unlock tool, developed by iPhone Dev team, to unlock iPhone 3G and supports firmware 2.2 (with baseband version 02.28.00). The software is freely available via Cydia. You’ll need to first jailbreak the iPhone before you can install the software.

Ultrasn0w – Ultrasn0w is the 2nd generation of unlock tool, developed by iPhone Dev team, to replace yellowsn0w. It is considered the ultimate unlock tool (as of now) to unlock iPhone 3G and 3GS on iPhone OS 3.0. To use ultrasn0w, it is required to jailbreak your iPhone first. The ultrasn0w software is available from Cydia and it’s free.

Purplesn0w – Developed by GeoHot, Purplesn0w is an alternative to Ultrasn0w for iPhone 3GS unlock. To use Purplesn0w, you’ll need to jailbreak the iPhone with Purplera1n before applying Purplesn0w.

Application Installers

Cydia – Developed by Jay Freeman, cydia is the most common installer for 3rd party iPhone application. Cydia supports the latest version of iPhone OS 3.0 and is installed by default during jailbreak process. Most of the iPhone apps in cydia are free for download. But cydia also offers a cydia store for purchasing paid apps.

Icy – An alternative of Cydia for installing 3rd party apps on iPhone, developed by RipDev. As claimed by the team, Icy offers better performance over cydia and is designed to compatible with any cydia packages. Icy can be installed during jailbreak process.

Installer – Installer is the 1st generation of 3rd party application installer. It supports firmware up to 2.2. Installer is a great app installer before the debut of Cydia. However, as of today, the iPhone apps available on Installer is much less than that on Cydia or Icy.

[SimonBlog]

No related posts.

Related posts brought to you by Sites like I-phone-home have been discussing this in detail, leading to a post on the Dev-Team Blog about one provider in particular: Pinch Media.

Pinch Media, however, is not the only tracking provider: on the iPhone alone there are three other companies: Flurry, Medialets, and Mobclix.

One provider in particular that has caught their attention: Pinch Media.

Being an approved app, it must first ask you for permission to use your location. If you tap “Don’t Allow”, it will ask you again in about a minute, the next time its ad changes. So you either stop using this app (because it pesters you so much about the location question), or you finally submit and tap “OK”. From that point on, your location and path info (your actual physical path through your area each time you launch the app) belongs to Pinch Media, Inc.

Once an iPhone application is Pinch Media enabled, the following information is stored locally:

iPhone’s unique ID

iPhone Model

OS Version

Application version

If the application is cracked/pirated

If your iPhone is jailbroken

time & date you start the application

time & date you close the application

your current latitude & longitude

your gender (if facebook enabled)

your birth month (if facebook enabled)

your birth year (if facebook enabled)

Your data is continually tracked and every use of the application recorded for the life of that application on your phone. Once you have a reliable connection, the information stored locally is sent in automatically to the mother-ship. At no point are you told what the Pinch Media enabled application is doing and at no time are you given an option to “opt-out”. Pinch Media explains itself here.

Pinch Media, however, is not the only tracking provider on the iPhone. There are three other companies: Flurry, Medialets, and Mobclix.

Developers integrate these systems for much the same reason people use Google Analytics: to better understand how their customers use their products. Not all applications using analytics on the back-end are to be feared. For the most part, the data being recorded is anonymous and helps the developers make better apps. The problem is that, as of today, there’s no way to know which apps are the safe ones. Fortunately, for Jailbreakers, there’s a solution, PrivaCy.

PrivaCy is a Settings Panel application that allows you to “selectively opt-out of sending anonymous usage statistics” to certain providers such as; Flurry, Medialets, Mobclix and Pinch Media.

PrivaCy can be installed by going into the Cydia section of the Cydia app (or, search for PrivaCy in Cydia). Once installed, you can then go into the stock Settings application > PrivaCy and choose to turn on/off the ability to send anonymous usage statistics for Flurry, Medialets, Mobclix and Pinch Media.

PrivaCy was developed as a team effort with Flurry, Medialets, Mobclix and Pinch Media. They not only gave their blessings, but also their technical expertise in disabling their systems.

No related posts.

Related posts brought to you by “We have just released a free update to our package installer tool, InstallerApp, for both Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows. Among other things, we have ensured it works on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, removed support for Installer repositories (that are no longer supported anyway), and stripped off the Pusher technology in favor of the existing jailbreak solutions such as PwnageTool and redsn0w. To install stuff onto the iPhone, simply install package named InstallerApp Support from Cydia or Icy on the device (from our repository apt.ripdev.com) and there you go! “<span

According to the most recent information from Pinch Media, 8.43% of iPhone users have jailbroken their phone. Of course, looking at the complete picture that is a small number of users, especially when you look at the percentage of non-jailbroken users — 91.57%.<a

Knowing that, one cannot help but wonder if the increase has had anything to do with the recent Google Voice controversy and the addition of GV Mobile in They go on to point out that jailbreaking can be undone by using iTunes to restore the iPhone to its factory settings. Good information for the timid jailbreaker.

They only issue I have is they mention that jailbroken apps can not be deleted just hidden. This is incorrect. You can delete these apps in 2 simple ways. The first way is to launch Cydia, navigate to the Manage section, and remove from there. The second option, which is the simplest in my opinion, is to use the jailbreak app CyDelete. CyDelete is an application that allows you to delete Jailbreak/Cydia applications right from the page the App icon is on. Just like you would any application from the App Store. See

“The 3.0.1 release is a “branch” from 3.0 that occurs (code-wise) before all the 3.1 betas. The programs redsn0w needs to change for the jailbreak are identical when you compare the 3.0 and 3.0.1 versions. It seems pretty much the only changes Apple made were for the SMS bug, which affects programs that redsn0w doesn’t touch. That’s why you can re-use redsn0w 0.8 on 3.0.1 even though it was written for 3.0.

And since 3.0.1 doesn’t touch the baseband either, ultrasn0w 0.9 works for those needing the soft unlock. Just install it from the repo666.ultrasn0w.com repository using Cydia as usual.

We’ll at some point fix redsn0w to recognize both 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW’s, but really that’s the only change that would be made to it. Everything else would be identical, so there’s no need to wait for the “proper” version that recognizes the 3.0.1 IPSW as valid.”

No related posts.

Related posts brought to you by <a
