DirecTV, which supplies signal to five flat screens in my house, has just announced the NFL Mobile app. It doesn’t go live until September 13th, but you can download it now.

Once working, the app will let you watch live streams of all NFL Sunday Ticket football games, including the Red Zone channel. The Red Zone channel changes from game to game as the ball gets inside an opponent’s 20 yard line while a narrator explains just what’s going on.

The app also will display scores, statistics for players and teams, as well as video clips and highlights from each game. So far there has been no word as to whether video streaming will be available on 3G as well as Wi-Fi, but we’ll know soon enough.

For the privilege of using this free app, you need to plunk down $379.95 for programming. The NFL Season Ticket will run you $299.95 but that’s not good enough to run the app. Additionally you’ll need to toss in another $80 to buy the SuperFan package which gives you games in high-definition, stats and the Red Zone Channel, making the NFL Mobile app the most expensive free app in the world.

If you have DirecTV and an iPhone or iPod touch, you need to go and download the DirecTV app. With all the added functionality, you’ll feel much better about paying your monthly bill.

Now that we’re approaching the end of the season and getting ready to head into October, there is a pretty good chance you’re going to start watching more games.  Especially if your favorite team is in the division race to clinch a playoff spot.  MLB.com At Bat has now made that more achievable with adding push notifications and providing more live games to thier list so you are less likely to miss out on the playoff rush.

Push Notifications can now be set to alert you when a game is getting ready start or when it has finished.  It is very simple to set up and disable on the fly.  Open up your settings page and tap “Notifications.”  You will then be able to choose multiple teams from the list that you would like to receive notifications.  Once you tap on a team you are taken to the page where you can easily customize what type of notifications you would like to receive (‘Game Start’ or ‘Game End’ or both).

Now we get down to the meat of this upgrade.  You can now access ANY regular season game that MLB.com At Bat has listed for $.99 per game.  You will still be able to access the free feed of 1-2 games a day, however, if it doesn’t include your team then this is your solution.  The quick and easy steps to purchasing a game will have you watching your game in no time.  On the main scoreboard page, tap the game you wish to purcahse (do not tap the arrow).  You will see the in-game details appear at the bottom of the screen.  Tap the .TV icon which will then allow you to tap “Buy this Game.”

This solid upgrade from MLB gives the iPhone user more access to their favorite team(s) and at the same enhances the experience through customization.

Apple has hit their target audience again by advertising their features for sports nuts.  In their latest commercial you get a glimpse of:

Before I stumbled onto RunKeeper, I explored the highly publicized Nike+ iPod Sport kit.  I’m not taking anything away from the impressive app, I just couldn’t bring myself to pay the $29.  I even own a pair of Nike kicks that is made for the kit!!!  Just couldn’t pull the trigger.

I decided to give RunKeeper a shot as an alternative.  They have a free version available, so why not?  To this day, I’m still abusing the same free app.  You don’t even have to be an everyday runner to enjoy this app.  Even if you run once a month, you are still asking yourself the same questions as an everyday runner: “How far did I run and what was my time?”  With RunKeeper, you’ll know this answer immediately plus your speed, map layout of run, and minutes per mile.  It will also keep a log of all this information not only on your device, but will upload to RunKeeper’s website and break down all the information you need to know as soon as you end your run.

While you run, the GPS on your iPhone keeps record of your distance which in turn is able to produce some of these outputs.  You are able to go online or view the map(s) on your device to show your path.  In the past, this app wasn’t totally accurate but it has since bounced back with updates to heavily minimize these errors.  Obviously, try to eliminate anything blocking you from the GPS signals if possible.

Along with other great features, my favorite would be the graph, shown below, that displays your elevation versus your speed.  At any point you can hover over the graph and it will display the speed you were running at the specific point of elevation.

If you want to take your game to another level, there is RunKeeper Pro which carries additional features that the Nike+ kit also has.  Although, you’ll save a little cash because RunKeeper Pro charges $10.  Advantages of RunKeeper Pro: Create your own training workouts that alert you of distance intervals and time through your headphones;  No advertising.

These are the main highlights that this app has to offer.  A new version has been submitted to the App Store for approval that includes new features.  The biggest change is being able to select a playlist through RunKeeper.  As of now, you must get your music playing before you fire up the RunKeeper app.  It does not matter if you run, walk, bike, hike, or ski.  RunKeeper will help you easily record time and distance or go to the extreme of setting goals to help train for events.

Is RunKeeper as good as or better than the Nike+ kit?  I can’t answer that.  Is it a good alternative? Absolutely.
